Unfit for purpose is a typeface inspired by the history of the South London Gallery Firestation building, predominantly based on its closure in 1920. The fire station, as it was, didn't meet the updated regulations for fire stations and was classified as 'unfit for purpose'. I wanted to extend this theme into a typographic context by making an effort not to follow modern typography rules while still ensuring it remained fully legible and visually appealing. To demonstrate this, I designed many of the letters to be top-heavy, as well as placing them at varying heights, which is not traditionally acceptable.
